In any retail or hospitality environment where speed, accuracy and precision are crucial a scanner allows the operator to quickly register items that have barcodes (UPC's).  This makes check out fast and accurate and makes the operator look more professional to their customers.  An LCD customer display also allows your customers to see the items that are rung up and can also allow you to show a scrolling marqee showing specials or upcharge items.
